Just 10 minutes easy walk along the beautifully landscaped promenade along the Sava River, takes you from the main town square in Slavonski Brod to a beautiful baroque building, a Franciscan monastery.
The monastery is surrounded by a beautiful park adorned with busts of prominent citizens of Slavonski Brod, and nearby is the museum of Brodsko Posavlje.
The construction of the Franciscan monastery began at the beginning and ended at the end of the 18th century. It lasted for a long time, 70 years, because the facility was built exclusively with donations from the citizens themselves.
The building of the Franciscan monastery consists of three monastery wings that close the square cloister with the church on one corner. With its exterior, the monastery exudes elegant simplicity, and although it acquired its basic form in the Baroque period, its lines are soft, graceful and mild.
Exterior ornaments are almost non-existent to emphasize the pastoral role of the building. True Baroque richness, playfulness and serenity reveal the interior of the church. The almost pompous splendor of the altar reveals the deep roots of the Franciscan monastery, but also of the city of that time, in the European Baroque heritage.
Of particular note is the cloister of the Franciscan monastery in Brod, which is the most representative cloister of Baroque monastery architecture, but not only that: the cloister of the Franciscan monastery in Brod is one of the most striking buildings of Baroque architecture in Slavonia!
