Brod-Posavina County is an elongated beauty located between the southern slopes of the Slavonian Mountains and the Sava River. To the modern traveler, it is perhaps best known as the area next to the busiest Croatian highway (A3), the one that connects Central Europe with Southeast.

At the same time, through this page of ours – because it is quite self-contained – our County invites you to discover its hidden corners, away from the hustle and bustle of the asphalt. Beautiful nature, a rich table, hosts for whom Hospitality seems to be the baptismal name of that history just enough to make it even more interesting for you, are a combination that make our region worth not only stopping by, but also staying.

Give yourself a few days and explore Slavonski Brod, home to the largest fortress in Croatia and one of the largest European Baroque fortifications. Here you will find out an interesting story about how the Military Border was created on the Sava 300 years ago, a kind of warlike forerunner of what we now call the Schengen border regime. You will also find out that not a single bullet was ever fired from the Fortress itself, except perhaps on some local bastard. You will also meet her protective characters, father and son Trenk (German: von der Trenck): the unbridled commander of the Fortress, Johann, was succeeded by his even more unbridled son, Franjo, one of the most vivid and cruel figures of the European wars of the 18th century…

Clearly, Brod is not all about war monuments and problematic types. You will find spiritual serenity in the beautiful Franciscan monastery, while a walk along the Sava promenade and the city promenade will remind you that the greatest works were written here by the great Ivana Brlić Mažuranić (1874-1938), the first dance steps were made by Mia Čorak Slavenska, one of the world’s greatest ballerina of the 20th century (1916-2002), and the first sculptural forms were conceived by the famous sculptor Branko Ružić (1919-1997). However, the place where the noble side of the two-century military administration in Slavonian Posavina is in the “genetic code” is Nova Gradiška. Today the center of the western part of the County, this town was planned to be built in the middle of the 18th century. Like other similar settlements in Croatia, Nova Gradiška is a real little pearl of meticulous Austrian urbanism in a green Slavonian ambience.

By lowering your research from the global to the local, go into even smaller places in our County. And from them arose some world names. For example, did you know that Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962) was born in 1883 in our Vrpolje? In the center of his native village today you can visit an interesting gallery dedicated to the character and work of this world-renowned sculptor. In the west of the County, another well-known, and in these pandemic times, the current name. Andrija Štampar (1888-1958) was, as many of us know today, the creator of public health not only in the former Yugoslavia, but also in many countries around the world. In addition, the first president of the World Health Organization (WHO). His definition of health – that it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not just the absence of disease – is still respected today, at least in theory.

In order to be like that in practice, we have no choice but to walk, pedal, swim, have a good time and have a good drink. The gentle landscapes of the Posavina lowlands and Slavonian hills in the background are the ideal scenery for this type of vacation. From the walls of old Cernik, to the border balconies along the Sava, from one rural household, ranch or holiday home, Slavonian Posavina dissolves as an ideal destination for all those who want to recharge their batteries in a different way, ie renew the spirit in the way they are. seemed the best and longest lasting:

I lie down on the grass. I feel like I am

Brother to the sun, to the wind, to the water.

You can only hear my sigh: I am

Trapped in freedom.

(Dragutin Tadijanović)
