"We have been border guards for a long time, we guarded the border on the Sava", are the verses that you probably had the opportunity to hear. It is a kind of anthem of Slavonian Posavina, a region that, like few others in Europe, shaped its cultural identity and physical appearance by the fact that for almost 200 years (ca. 1700-1880) it played the role of a bulwark between the two empires, Austria and Turkey. . As a reminder of that time, other folk customs, the characteristic appearance of the village ("ušorenih- builded in a line"" along the roads and paths) and several first-class historical monuments and photo attractions.

The largest among them is the fortress in Slavonski Brod (from the German word for fortress, Festung, comes its second name). According to the chronicles, this monstrosity was built "by the torment and sweat of the border guards" during most of the 18th century, only to be found sinking into the surrounding swampy ground soon after its completion. It was never used, and for a long time it prevented the people of Brod from building brick buildings (its reach was not to be obscured by solid structures). Basically, a monumental example of war architecture, problematic mega-investments and changes in the spirit of the time - what used to often give headaches, today is the biggest cultural and tourist attraction in the County. Don't miss it, especially since, in addition to the story of the Military Border, you will also find an interesting tambourine museum inside its trenches (who knows, you might even play "Border Guards of the Old"). Modernist souls, don't worry - there is also a gallery of contemporary art, rich in sculptures by Branko Ružić and his sculptural contemporaries.festung 1

Fortress Brod - Festung

The walk to the Fortress will take you from the center of Brod for ten minutes to the west. On the way back, if you continue across the Promenade and the romantic promenade along the Sava to the east, among the canopies of old plane trees you will see the ramparts of the Franciscan monastery with the Church of the Holy Trinity. And this building was erected throughout almost the entire 18th century. The wait, however, paid off. Externally resembling a fortress, the monastery complex hides one of the most luxurious Baroque cloisters (courtyards) in Croatia. In his library, however, are kept many valuable volumes, including several incunabula (books printed before 1500). Valuable collections are also kept by the nearby Museum of Brodsko Posavlje, which will soon have a long-awaited permanent exhibition.

In the meantime, the Franciscan monastery in Cernik near Nova Gradiška is perhaps more grateful for the visit. The story is similar to that of the monastery in Brod. The Franciscans of Cernik their monastery with the church of St. Petra has also been raised for decades. In addition to decorating the building, they also collect a valuable monumental collection. Therefore, here today you can visit the museum of biblical material (including objects from the Holy Land) and a very valuable archaeological and paleontological collection. If you stay in sightseeing longer than planned, great! In the complex you can spend the night, have a snack, and if you wish, participate in daily work, spiritual renewal or prayer. Regeneration of mind and body guaranteed!

If you got caught up in the night in Cernik because you were bodybuilding, you won't be any less "hard" the next day. In front of you is a walk through the park of the Marković-Kulmer castle, an interesting building which, although renovated in the 18th century, still resembles its original, medieval-renaissance edition. Since the castle itself is closed to the public, take a walk towards the yard of the local school, where you will experience this area in the palm of your hand through a model of the Cernik area. If you head north from here, in the hills ten kilometers away above the village of Baćin Dol, you will come across the medieval fortress Gračanica. If you continue south, you are closer to the present - in Nova Gradiška, the pocket Venus of Habsburg military urbanism. In addition to the ambience of the old Exerzierplatz (military training ground with a park), here you can also peek into two beautiful churches - the older one was built in the middle, you guessed it, of the 18th century, dedicated to St. Theresa, and is adorned with an unusual but photogenic tower. She is younger from 1829 and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is also the City Museum nearby, which you are also welcome to visit.

You will find interesting localities in other parts of our County. In the west, in Okučani, there is a memorial to the "Flash" operation, which liberated western Slavonia in the 1995 Homeland War. If you descend from here towards the Sava, Stara Gradiška will meet you there. Once home to another great fortress, then the seat of the infamous prison, this place today is reminiscent of a ghost town or a set of some kind of apocalypse movie. Fans of topics like these will surely come into their own here. There is another impressive time station on the Sava. Together with the monuments in the area of Cernik, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kobaš (Shrine of Our Lady of Kloštar) is one of the few preserved medieval monuments in Slavonian Posavina. This Gothic building and place of pilgrimage (especially around August 15, for the feast of the Assumption) will instantly draw you into the "movie" of the Middle Ages, and your "camera" will not be hated.
